Toronto: Birdtown and Swanville has gathered a talented group of artistic weirdos for a brand new edition of their multidisciplinary summer festival FRIENDS AND OUTSIDERS, happening June 21-23 at Videofag in Kensington Market.
The company has had some great success performing at Fringe and Summerworks with shows like Dumbo Squid, The Physical Ramifications of Attempted Global Domination, and 36 Little Plays About Hopeless Girls – so they decided to do a festival of their own.
The event started as an excuse to remount the company's earliest plays, The Lee Press On Nail Show – an off-the-wall comedy about girls, boyfriends, dancing, and In Living Colour. Running only 20 minutes long, the show itself was hardly an excuse, so we gathered a bunch of our friends and some people we don't know and jammed them all in a tiny room together. The result is a chaotic whirlwind of comedy, music, spoken word, theatre, performance art, and film that – for possibly very good reasons – is unlike anything you're likely to encounter. So leave your expectations at the curb and prepare to be dazzled.
The fun times at FRIENDS AND OUTSIDERS include comedian Kathleen Phillips, The Winos of Tuscany – a strange play based on a poster by Nobody's Business Theatre, Meredith Cheesbrough, Bridget Moser, character monologues by Monique Moses, a short film by Sofia Bohdanowicz, and musical guest Weaves. This will be the second edition of FRIENDS AND OUTSIDERS, the first happened in 2009 at Jamie's Area.
And stay tuned for more Birdtown and Swanville action in August, when the company presents Family Story at Gallery 1313 in Parkdale as part of Summerworks.
