Entertaining Mr. Sloane
Directed by Brendan Healy (Artistic Director, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre) Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr. Sloane is a dark comedy about the shocking and menacing aspects of human nature. Sloane, a brooding, dangerous lodger is pitted against his hosts in a series of controversial and sexually explicit encounters. The cast features: Soulpepper Founding Member Stuart Hughes; David Beazely in his Soulpepper debut; Fiona Reid; and Michael Simpson. Mature content.
Entertaining Mr. Sloane runs from July 5 to August 17; opening night is July 17.
Great Expectations
One of English literature's greatest coming-of-age stories, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens follows the orphaned but resourceful Pip, who grows from a blacksmith's apprentice into a London gentleman, always attempting to live up to the expectations of the beautiful but scornful Estella. In a faithful adaptation by Michael Shamata (A Christmas Carol), Great Expectations features Naomi Agard in her Soulpepper debut, Oliver Becker, Oliver Dennis, Leah Doz, Deborah Drakeford, Jesse Aaron Dwyre in his Soulpepper debut, John Jarvis, C. David Johnson, Jeff Lillico, Brenda Robins, and Paolo Santalucia.
Great Expectations runs from July 6 to August 17; opening night is July 16.
Angels in America
Part I: Millennium Approaches and Part II: Perestroika
Subtitled A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, Tony Kushner's Angels in America is arguably the most significant drama of the last 25 years. Encompassing the lives of seven individuals as they negotiate New York City during the AIDS crisis that wracked the world in the 1980s, Kushner looks to a deeply human series of reactions to a seemingly indiscriminate epidemic, and offers spiritual outlet for the redemption and reclamation of their souls. A multi-play experience, Angels in America parts I and II are best seen chronologically. Directed by Albert Schultz, the cast includes: Soulpepper Founding Members Diego Matamoros and Nancy Palk; Troy Adams in his Soulpepper debut; Damien Atkins; Raquel Duffy; Michelle Monteith; Gregory Prest; and Mike Ross. Mature content.
Angels in America Part I: Millennium Approaches runs from July 19 to September 14; opening night is July 31.
Angels in America Part II: Perestroika runs from July 20 to September 14; opening night is August 1.
In recognition of Angels in America's social impact on HIV/AIDS consciousness, Soulpepper has partnered with Casey House to raise awareness and public discourse. Casey House marks 25 years of compassionate care in the Toronto community, providing palliative and supportive care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
In celebration of Angels in America, Soulpepper will be participating in this year's Pride Toronto festivities with an entry of 100 artists and a live band (and much more) in the 33rd Annual Pride Parade on June 30.
