TORONTO, June 24, 2013 – Guild Festival Theatre is proud to announce its third annual season at the open-air Greek Stage at the Guild Gardens: an exuberant, open-air version of Molière’s The Misanthrope, one of the world’s funniest and wisest comedies.
Guild Festival Theatre Artistic Director Sten Eirik has described the title character as “the Hamlet of the comedies of manners,” which gives a hint at the fun contained in Molière’s brilliant genre-bending, thought-provoking masterpiece.
Adjacent to the rugged cliffs of the Scarborough Bluffs, overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Ontario, each performance takes on the magic of this enchanted setting with an open-air stage of marble columns, Corinthian capitals, and elegant arches – the only theatre of its kind in Canada.
In 17th century Paris, the urban gentleman Alceste insists on unconditional honesty in a world where he’s surrounded by phoney compliments, affectation and backbiting. Only trouble is, he is head-over- heels in love with Celimène, who is a gorgeous embodiment of all that he despises! Giggle, snicker and cackle out loud at every step of Alceste’s head-on crusade against hypocrites and schmoozers, while glorious 17th century music fills the Guild Gardens, and our marbled stage rustles with crinolines and periwigs.
The cast is headlined by real-life couple Bruce Beaton and Sochi Fried as Alceste and Célimène (both appearing courtesy of CAEA). The Misanthrope also featuring John Chou, Leslie DosRemedios, Ryan Egan, Victoria Hudson-Muir, Rick Persich, Andrew Pimento and Tina Sterling.
The Misanthrope runs from July 18 to August 11 at the majestic outdoor Greek Theatre in the Guild Gardens, directed by Guild Festival Theatre founder Sten Eirik.
BMO Financial Group returns as our Presenting Sponsor, with media sponsorship by The New Classical 96.3 FM and The Toronto Star.
