Give your laptop the finger: Socialist Games at The Theatre Centre
We're getting downright jockish this summer with Socialist* Games--an evening of shifting our asses into gear and engaging in some aggressive merriment. And we don't mean sitting around a table sipping cappuccinos and playing some pussy-ass boardgames. Socialist* Games calls on strangers to play with strangers in wave after wave of summer-camp style activities - minus the summer camp, plus the awkwardness, and double the hotness. So give your laptop the finger and head over to The Theatre Centre. By the end of the night you will be much more sweaty, much less of a stranger, and a much more of a socialist*.
Venue: The Theatre Centre Pop-Up / 1095 Queen St. West
Dates: June, Thursdays 13, 20, 27 @ 6:00 - 7:30ish
Cost: Sliding scale - From each according to her finances, to each according to his need (Or PWYC: something around $5-10 would be nice).
*Socialist, n. One inclined to seek out and enjoy the company of others.
Allegations, a (re)enactment of the infamous alleged video of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack
The Torontonians have made big news, big time, with Allegations our (re)enactment of the Rob Ford crack-smoking video, conceived by 17-year-old Virginia Antonipillai. Within hours of posting the video we were the lead story on Canada.com in an article by Marc Weisblott, followed quickly by a feature in the Globe and Mail by James Adams. The video is currently approaching 8,000 views. If we hit 10,000, 16-year-old Torontonian Ahash Jeeva will SHAVE OFF HIS FUZZSTACHE. This is SERIOUS, people. So check out the video and help us put that little ghastly upper-lip-caterpillar out of its misery.
Future Tastes of Toronto: At the Kids' Table at Luminato Festival
Right now, we're partnering up with the Madeleine Collective and hanging out with Toronto's Luminato Festival and a bunch of kids from Dovercourt Public School, Duke of Connaught Junior and Senior Public School, George Peck Public School, Lord Dufferin Junior and Senior Public School and Rose Avenue Junior Public School. Throughout the Festival’s opening weekend (June 15-16), the city’s best chefs will be showcasing Toronto through culinary and other collaborations with these kids at the Historic Distillery District. Prior to the Festival, local Toronto chefs are working with six classes of grades 3-6 students, sharing details about their gastronomic adventures and the culinary delights they will be showcasing. But the chefs and their young apprentices will be sharing more than just great food- central to the experience will be The Kids’ Table, a communal eating space where the kids will divulge their behind-the-scenes knowledge about the chefs and the food being presented. The Kid’s Table is an unexpected mash-up of Toronto children and Toronto chefs. Sharing only temperament, these two groups provide a fully informed dining experience, the kids letting the diner in on all the things needed to know about the chefs: their favourite colours, the name of their spouses and whether or not they've broken any bones. Feel like eating amongst a crowd of children? We got you covered--just head down next weekend.
How to Hook Up in Toronto
Toronto is teeming with talented young people who can drop a beat or bust a move in deft and dope ways. How to Hook Up, hosted by the Torontonians, is a web-series showcasing Toronto’s talented youth - people from all over this town, equipped with mad skills and brains bursting with intelligence. We're doing some film-production workshops with Toronto professionals (keep your eye on the 180 degree rule, yo), hosting, filming and editing the series. Each episode will showcase the city's various culture vibes, from Jane and Finch to Scarborough Village, and the young people who make up the neighbourhoods. There will be a melange potpourri momo congee stew of segments that see us make some friends, reach to new 'hoods, and talk really loud on the subway - all integral components of what we eruditely define as “Hooking it up”, Mammalian style. We are deeply deeply honoured to have planned hook-ups with a number of Toronto's most innovative youth organizations: Just BGRAPHIC, Arts for Children and Youth, Art Starts, Urban Arts and Theatre for Peace.
20th Anniversary Party at the Gladstone Hotel
If you haven’t heard, 2013 marks the 20th year of Mammalian's operations so we're having a BIG birthday party to celebrate. We're still working out the details, but we'll be playing games, singing a few songs, maybe getting some kids to cut some hair and doing a bit of dancing. It's happening in the middle of summer, so we're keeping an eye on keeping it chilled. Put a big bloody X on your calendar for Thursday, July 18th and come celebrate with us at the Gladstone Hotel. Check our website, www.mammalian.ca, or our Facebook page for more details soon.
Eat the Street in Cork
We’re back at the Cork Midsummer Festival and working with kids from North Presentation Primary school. We're dragging them around to some of Cork’s hottest restaurants where they will be fed and feted before offering their uncensored opinions on everything from the food, to the service, to the décor. For the cost of a meal, the public is invited to sit amongst the kids for a front-row view of the junior connoisseurs in action! Find out more here. This presentation of Eat the Street has been made possible in part by grants from the Ontario Arts Council's National and International Touring program and the Canada Council for the Arts Theatre International Program.
