Toronto, ON… In its 34rd year, Nightwood Theatre offers up provocative fare with its 2013-14 season. We’re thrilled to announce the North American premiere of Free Outgoing by India’s celebrated playwright Anupama Chandrasekhar. We are also pleased to share the rich poetic narrative of The Carousel by Governor General’s Award winning playwright Jennifer Tremblay in her anticipated sequel to the The List (Nightwood 2010).
Nightwood launches the season in January 2014 with Free Outgoing directed by Kelly Thornton and featuring a stellar cast led by Anusree Roy and Sanjay Talwar. Developed through the Royal Court Theatre’s International Residency Program, Free Outgoing opened in London to rave reviews in 2007 and was shortlisted for the Charles Wintour Award, the John Whiting Award and the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. It was revived in 2008 and transferred to the Traverse Theatre for the Edinburgh Fringe. “A gripping and insightful play” (Time Out), Free Outgoing tracks the fall-out of a text messaging scandal, wherein the video clip of a young girl in the sexual act spreads like a virus, igniting a national outcry over her sexuality. With gut wrenching intensity and a sharp wit, Chandrasekhar brilliantly dissects the clash of tradition and modernity in her culture and confronts an increasingly pervasive issue. In exposing how mistakes made in the naivety of youth can destroy lives, Free Outgoing stirs up grave issues around sexuality and safety in the digital age.
In March 2014, Nightwood brings you The Carousel, directed by Megan Follows, in her directorial debut, and starring the incomparable Allegra Fulton, touted as “one of Canada’s acting treasures” (NOW Magazine). Nightwood is thrilled to continue our relationship with playwright Jennifer Tremblay and to reunite her with Fulton, who so beautifully embodied her text in Nightwood’s 2010 smash-hit production of The List. Written as a sequel, the same unnamed woman now faces the imminent death of her mother and must make the journey home to confront her past. Poetically structured as rides on a carousel, The Carousel peels away the layers of familial guilt and fierce love that bind three generations of women. Tremblay is a master of language, reflecting the physical voyage of a wintery quest on Quebec’s North Shore, as it mirrors the inward journey navigating the barren landscape of our souls.
Says Artistic Director Kelly Thornton, “The issues that Chandrasekhar and Tremblay confront are difficult, daring and ripe ground for Nightwood to take hold. Both plays are roller-coaster rides; one lives in the realm of the subconscious, with a woman facing her mother’s imminent death, and the other lives wide awake in the realm of now, as a mother tries to catch her daughter’s devastating fall. Fearless, muscular and meaningful drama; exactly what audiences have come to expect from Nightwood Theatre”.

One message is all it took. When a young girl is filmed during a sexual indiscretion, the video clip spreads like a virus infecting her community and then the entire country with a burning moral outrage. Free Outgoing sets the rampant technology of the modern world against the conservatism of traditional India, and asks the universal question, how can we protect our girls in the digital age?
