Stimulating Toronto audiences once again with their giant, striking, memorable images, Clay & Paper Theatre invites you to their 17th sensational summer season in Dufferin Grove Park for Our Last Best Hope, a bold new play inspired in part by the Idle No More movement, written by David Anderson (C&P Founder & Artistic Director) and Angela Loft (C&P alumnus). An adult show disguised as a children’s show for reticent adults, Our Last Best Hope tackles some
“First Nations represent Canadians’ last best hope of stopping Canada from mass destruction of our shared lands, waters, plants and animals in the name of resource development for export to foreign countries...”
- Pam Palmater, Mi'kmaq lawyer and professor, and academic director of the Centre for Indigenous Governance at Ryerson University
In our current world of denial of the ecological, social, historical and political realities of our time, Our Last Best Hope is a wake-up call for action, for working together, for changing our direction, for slogging through with our friends and the slowest amongst us until we are successful.
On your mark... get set...
Inspirations for the text, lyrics and imagery in the show come from many sources: Andrew Nikiforuk’s book “The Energy of Slaves; “The Inconvenient Indian” and “The Truth About Stories” by Thomas King; Alanis Obamsawin’s films; C&P Artistic Director David Anderson’s trips volunteering with ArtsCanCircle in remote First Nations communities; a C&P community reading of Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound; the women who initiated #Idle No More as a hash-tag; interviews about the Idle No More movement; and the brilliant leadership action of Chief Theresa Spence to drive Canadians to consciousness.
Co-written and directed by Clay & Paper Theatre Founder and Artistic Director David Anderson, Our Last Best Hope features Music Direction by Chris Wilson, Design by Thomas Barker, and a stellar cast of emerging professionals.
Founded in 1994 by David Anderson (longtime theatre activist, producer of new Canadian work, and defender of public space), Clay & Paper Theatre has created, developed and performed multi-disciplinary, community-driven theatrical works using narrative theatre, music and large-scale puppetry in public spaces. A little theatre company asking big questions with humour and irreverence, Clay & Paper Theatre is not funny and is never serious.
