Toronto, Ontario– In celebration of 25 years of unforgettable theatre The Toronto Fringe is throwing its biggest festival ever! Get plenty of rest tonight, because tomorrow we kick off twelve days of theatre and dance, art and adventure!
The place to be for the opening ceremony is our newly expanded Fringe Club at 581 Bloor Street West, where we'll start things off with a bang at 4:30PM sharp. The Toronto Fringe's new executive director Kelly Straughan leads with opening remarks, followed by introductions from special guests Mike Layton (city councillor for Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina), Olivia Chow (MP for Trinity-Spadina) and David Mirvish (Mirvish Productions producer and son of the late "Honest" Ed Mirvish). From there it's straight on to the third annual poster sprint, followed by a free concert from Polaris-nominated band Hooded Fang!
In our 25 year history, we've presented tons of amazing indie theatre, and this year is no exception: 148 shows, spanning 35 venues in every imaginable genre and discipline to choose from, including of course, FringeKids! shows each day at the Palmerston Library, for the young and young-at-heart.
Throughout the festival we have a number of special anniversary programming including an Underground Dance Party on Saturday July 6th in the parking lot below Honest Ed’s where we invite you to party like it’s 1989. On Thursday July 11th, we invite you to take a trip down memory lane with our 25th Anniversary Alumni Party at the Tranzac Club. Host James Gangl takes the stage at 8pm to lead a fun awards ceremony, trivia challenge and 25 Fringe stories in 25 minutes.
With all of the exciting productions, artwork and must-see events, the 2013 Fringe Festival promises to be a celebration you’ll remember for years to come!
The Toronto Fringe
Now celebrating its 25th year, the Toronto Fringe provides creative opportunities for artists and audiences by producing two important festivals – the Toronto Fringe Festival and the Next Stage Theatre Festival – and by running outreach activities that benefit youth, artists and the theatre community at large. Our new home, the Fringe Creation Lab, welcomes independent artists year round, encouraging their creative work by offering them affordable space to make art, congregate and innovate.
