FeverGraph's new variation of Look Back in Anger is a contemporary cross-study of four people, crippled by their ideas of societal and interpersonal oppression. It is an examination of our longing to feel something deeper, something greater; the longing which is ultimately only satisfied through self-annihilation.
Look Back in Anger has not been professionally produced in Toronto in over 25 years. To exhume this text, we’re also re-awakening the former Thrush Holmes Empire gallery, setting this piece in the stark, abandoned location in the heart of Queen West.
Anger is like a broken record; its relentless playback haunts us and can destroy us. Driven to take this challenging male-centric text and awaken its contemporary potential, FeverGraph, a female-centred company, is using Look Back in Anger to expose our common sense of futility and the anger that results.
Look Back in Anger is directed by Anita La Selva (A Soldier's Story; Outstanding Direction/Production NOW Magazine, The Burning Bush: Young Centre for Performing Arts ) and co-conceived by an exciting team of performers: Eli Ham (Covert Affairs: Universal, Copper: ABC/BBCA, The Hours that Remain: New Harlem/SNTC, Macbeth: Humber River Shakespeare Company) as Jimmy Porter, Adriano Sobretodo Jr. (Matchbox Macbeth: Litmus Theatre), Tosha Doiron (Help Yourself; Theatre Brouhaha) and Zoë Sweet (Enough Rope: Enough Rope Performance Collective). Lighting design by Melissa Joakim (Delicacy, Help Yourself), sound design by Kevin Munro (Broompole Productions).
