Stage Door News
The Rhubarb Festival invites artists into a critic-free environment where bold, thought-provoking and boundary-pushing works can thrive. Over two weeks, hundreds of artists from Toronto and beyond transform the Buddies neighbourhood into a hotbed of creativity and experimentation, sharing new ideas in contemporary theatre, performance art, dance, and music with adventure-loving audiences.
We are currently seeking proposals for our upcoming festival (February 12 – February 23, 2014)
DOWNLOAD THE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES & APPLICATION FORM
Selected projects will be featured during the festival and will receive technical, production, promotional and artistic support. In addition to an honorarium, festival artists also receive an unlimited artist pass, allowing them to see work for free by local, national and international artists in our programme.
GENERAL CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
DEADLINE: 5PM, Friday September 13, 2013
Rhubarb seeks proposals for new, not previously produced performance projects (30 minutes or less) and performative experiments. Submissions are encouraged from both established and emerging creators working in theatre, performance art, dance, music, interdisciplinary and hybrid forms. Of particular interest this year are projects, approaches and ideas that are process-driven, consider the theatre as a laboratory and explore the possibilities of Rhubarb as a testing ground and place for research and development.
SPECIAL PROJECT CALL:
NEW! OPEN SPACE PROJECTS
DEADLINE: 5PM Friday September 13, 2013
For our 35th year, Rhubarb is collaborating with multiple local queer organizations to open our sites as locations for performance happenings, process-driven projects, interventions and site-specific works. Rhubarb seeks projects that respond to the concepts of history, archive and ‘making public’ designed for one or more of the following locations:
•Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (12 Alexander St.)
•Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (24 Isabella St.)
•Glad Day Bookshop (598 Yonge St.)
•Pink Triangle Press (2 Carlton St.)
•The 519 Church Street Community Centre (519 Church St.)
In addition to responding to the unique conditions of each site, artists are encouraged to imagine new possibilities for public engagement and broadcast within these contexts. Works that connect and/or move between these locations will also be considered.
Please see the Submission Guidelines and Application Form for more information.
ABOUT THE RHUBARB FESTIVAL
“Toronto’s go to event for thought-provoking, political, adventurous entertainment.”
-Toronto Life
Established in 1979, the Rhubarb Festival is produced by Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and is Canada’s longest-running festival of new performance offering Toronto fresh, live encounters with contemporary theatre, performance art, dance and music. For over three decades, Rhubarb has encouraged established artists to take new risks and emerging artists to explore the possibilities of performance in a supportive space. Over the course of its history, Rhubarb has had an immeasurable impact on the local and Canadian cultural landscape by acting as a seeding ground for new work. A great number of Rhubarb projects have gone on to be further developed and presented in Toronto, across Canada and internationally.
ABOUT BUDDIES IN BAD TIMES THEATRE
Buddies in Bad Times Theatre creates vital Canadian theatre by developing and presenting voices that question sexual and cultural norms. Built on the political and social principles of queer liberation, Buddies supports artists and works that reflect and advance these values. As the world’s longest-running and largest queer theatre, Buddies is uniquely positioned to develop, promote, and preserve stories and perspectives that are challenging and alternative. The theatre sits in the heart of downtown, adjacent to Toronto’s Gay Village. In addition to being a theatre, Buddies is a popular nightclub with weekly late-night events occurring year-round.
