Toronto, ON - The playwright’s festival that started it all for Latin American playwrights in Canada is going into its sixth year. To date the one of a kind festival has developed the new works of over 20 Latin American writers in Canada. Featuring works by Bruce Gibbons, Jefferson Guzman, Flavia Hevia and Rosa Laborde, the 6th annually De Colores Festival of New Works will be presented at the Wychwood Theatre October 16 to 18.
This year’s festival will feature four new and exciting plays. Paradise Red by Chilean playwright Bruce Gibbons is set in the tone of a dark telenovela and takes on a lesser known side of the Pinochet Fascist Dictatorship: the private lives of the military families who, living in total oblivion in regard to the abuse and violence they created, refuse to face the consequences of their irreparable damage. Jefferson Guzman’s Solaz is based on the true events of a family in Costa Rica. Rafael is an angel, respectful to his parents, loving brother and sister. When a car accident results in Rafael’s death, his family splinters under the heaviness of grief.
Have You Lost Something? by Flavia Hevia is part installation piece, part object, puppet and shadow theatre. The project is a theatrical show that is a tribute to books. The show is based freely on characters and passages from the literary works of Roberto Bolaño, one of the most important writers of the second part of the 20th century. A tragic comedy, Marine Life by Rosa Laborde, is a delicate piece about complicated intimacies set against a backdrop of apocalyptic proportions. The play incorporates magic realism, humor and live music while exploring themes of environmentalism, creativity and the end of everything.
The 2103 De Colores Festival will also feature an excerpt of a piece by the Nueva Voz Youth Theatre Program nightly.
Alameda Theatre Company produces Canadian theatre with a distinct Latin American perspective. The company develops the new work of Canadian Latin American playwrights, create professional opportunities for their artists and mentor the next generation of Latino artists in Canada. The De Colores Festival of New Works is a playwright’s unit and festival that exclusively features Latin American Canadian writers and exposes Canadian audiences to new theatrical works featuring Latin American actors and directors.
