The Weavers, Gerhard Hauptmann’s most acclaimed play, is based on the revolt of the Silesian weavers of 1844 and portrays in a starkly realistic manner the human cost of the Industrial Revolution. Reduced to starvation because of the introduction of power looms, the weavers are driven to revolt against their employer. This epic drama captures the dynamic of what many consider the first conscious collective action for workers rights and social justice. “It is time the play was remounted,” says Vrenia Ivonoffski, director. “It has profound resonance for our times." Hauptmann received a Nobel Prize in Literature (1912) for his work as a dramatist. Much of his focus was on giving voice to the poor and dispossessed.
