(Toronto)—V-Day Toronto, with the generous support of Nightwood Theatre and Young People’s Theatre, is pleased to present the Canadian premiere of Emotional Creature. Written by award-winning playwright Eve Ensler, the play is based on Ensler’s bestselling book I Am An Emotional Creature: The Secret Lives Of Girls Around The World, a moving work inspired by conversations with teenaged girls across the globe. Emotional Creature is a bold, funny and poignant invitation to girls everywhere to raise their voices, claim their bodies, follow their hearts, and strive to be who they were born to be. The benefit performances are directed by Tanisha Taitt. Proceeds will benefit the Metro Action Committee on Violence against Women and Children (METRAC).
Acclaimed by The New York Time as “a joyous, girl-powered production,” Emotional Creature is a collage of songs, monologues, and spoken-word pieces exploring the lives of young women around the world. Featuring original music by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and choreography by Ayesha Mansur the production showcases the talents of thirteen young women aged 13-19, some of whom are making their theatrical debuts. They are: Gabriella Albino, Shamai Bryant, Katherine Cappellacci, Lucy Carolan, Riley Chow, Abigail Isaac-Joseph, Jaime Klingenberg, Halima Mohamed, Katy Nicholas, Mycah Panjaitan, Adele Thomson, Olivia Thornton-Nickerson, and Kitty Zhang.
Tony-Award winning playwright, performer and activist Eve Ensler is the author of the worldwide phenomenon The Vagina Monologues, and founder of V-Day, a global activist movement to stop violence against women and girls. Her book, I Am An Emotional Creature: The Secret Lives of Girls Around the World not only inspired this play, but was also the catalyst for V-Girls, a growing network of young female activists working to make conditions better for girls worldwide.
