The Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto is honoured to announce a Canadian first. The Open Program of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards is bringing three of their incredible shows to Toronto, for the first time ever in Canada. Hailing from Pontedera, Italy, the Open Program’s 10 international artists invite Canadian audiences to discover their incredible work.
Led by Mario Biagini, the work of the Open Program aims to re-discover the very nucleus of theatre: the moment of meaningful contact between human beings. Their current performances, I am America and Electric Party Songs, arise from an investigation of Allen Ginsberg’s poetry. Poems are woven with traditional songs and shouts from the southern United States, as well as original pieces. All this leads to an electric, high-energy performance of poetry, song and celebration!
While all of the productions are having their Canadian Premiere, we are delighted to feature their newest work, The Hidden Sayings, which interlaces songs of The South with ancient Coptic texts. A captivating piece.
Whether you have followed the work of world-renown founder of the Workcenter, Jerzy Grotowski, or are discovering this company for the first time, these performances are sure to leave you resonating with their powerful music and poetry. The company features artists from all over the world, including Lloyd Bricken (USA), Robin Gentien (France), Agnieszka Kazimierska (Poland), Felicita Marcelli (Italy), Ophelie Maxo (France), Luciano Mendes de Jesus (Brazil), Alejandro Tomás Rodriguez (Argentina), Graziele Sena (Brazil) and Suellen Serrat (Brazil). Director Mario Biangini (Italy) has been with the Workcenter for over 20 years, and has brought this company all over the world, including most recently to China, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France and the USA. Don’t miss this rare Canadian opportunity!
