Audiences just can't get enough of THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS, THE MUSICAL! The hit of this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival, THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS, THE MUSICAL! has proved just as popular at the Panasonic Theatre, where it began on December 18 and was due to close on January 5. Now, due to popular demand, 5 more performances have been added! This affectionate spoof of musicals will now close on January 12.
Program Notes:
Back in 2004, Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart wanted to collaborate on a new show. After much discussion, they realized it’s pretty difficult to write an Oklahoma or Cabaret, a Sweeney Todd, a Mame, or a Phantom. So instead, they decided to just pretend they wrote them. After all, why be a second-rate original when you could be a first-rate imitation. Being great lovers of musical theatre, and knowing every single musical that had played Broadway in the last 60 years, they also decided: Sometimes one musical is not enough! And so they set out to write five musicals, each in the style of a different composer and lyricist. That resulted in:
THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS: THE MUSICAL!
A satiric love-letter to musicals of the 20th century
We know you’re here because you are fans of musical theatre and therefore, you’ve probably seen many of the shows that were created by the five legendary composer/lyricist teams that are being satirized. Many of the shows have actually played in one of the Mirvish theatres. To jog your memories, and save you the Google search time, we’re going to remind you about some of the best known shows that will be referenced in our show.
