It is a record-breaking and very happy holiday season at the four Mirvish theatres this year. Each theatre has been busy with a musical, each show a popular success -- ONCE at the Royal Alexandra, LES MISERABLES at the Princess of Wales, Disney's ALADDIN at the Ed Mirvish, and THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS, THE MUSICAL! at the Panasonic.
In total over the three-week holiday period, December 16 to January 5, these shows played to more than 150,000 audience members and grossed more than $13.5 million. This is a record in the Mirvish's 50 year theatre history for the holiday period; in fact, a record for any three-week period at any time of the year.
Said David Mirvish: "Toronto audiences have proven once again that they are among North America's most avid and loyal theatregoers. Thanks to them, our city's theatre industry continues to go from strength to strength.
"Of course, our success is also the city's success. Theatregoing has a very strong economic impact. People do not just go to the theatre -- they also have a meal before or afterwards; they come downtown and partake of the shops and services. All this provides jobs to thousands and thousands of people.
"Just the four shows alone employ over 1,000 people -- onstage, backstage and in the front-of house. Theatre is an economic engine that goes at full speed when all is working well.
"Many thanks as well to our partners for four exceptional shows. To Cameron Mackintosh for his wonderful new production of LES MISERABLES. To Thomas Schumacher and everyone at Disney Theatrical for a truly magical ALADDIN. To Barbara Broccoli, Fred Zollo and Robert Cole for the superb touring production of ONCE. To Vintage Productions for the transfer of their Fringe hit THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS, THE MUSICAL!
"What a wonderful way this has been for us to celebrate 50 years in Toronto theatre. We are eternally grateful and humbled."
LES MISERABLES will continue its limited Toronto engagement until February 2.
But both ALADDIN and ONCE will close their sold-out Toronto runs on January 5. ALADDIN prepares for its transfer to Broadway and ONCE continues its North American tour with a visit to Boston.
THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS, THE MUSICAL! was also due to close on January 5, but demand for the show has been so overwhelming that David Mirvish negotiated an extra week at the Panasonic Theatre from the venue's next tenant, the dance musical ARRABAL.
THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS, THE MUSICAL! is extended until January 12. Tickets to the five new performances of this hilarious parody of Broadway musicals are now on sale.
