Toronto, ON - January 6, 2014: Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced details about Soulpepper's January - February lineup, including a new production of Idiot's Delight, returning Soulpepper trilogy The Norman Conquests, and the inaugural series of Soulpepper Salons.
IDIOT'S DELIGHT (USA 1936)
Robert E. Sherwood's Pulitzer Prize-winning Idiot's Delight is Soulpepper's 2014 season opener. This romantic comedy, with dance and live music, is set against the dawning of the Second World War. Albert Schultz directs a cast of wonderfully eccentric and international characters - countesses, arms dealers, showgirls, revolutionaries, charlatans and lovers - as they spend a fateful weekend stranded at a resort in the Italian Alps. Idiot's Delight runs from January 23 to March 1; opening night is January 30.
For the first time ever, past and current members of the Soulpepper Academy make up the majority of the cast and creative team on a Soulpepper production. Members of the 2013-2015 Academy involved include: Mikaela Davies, Peter Fernandes, Katherine Gauthier, Hailey Gillis, Gordon Hecht, Richard Lam, Oyin Oladejo, and Colin Christopher Palangio (cast); Anahita Dehbonehie and Shannon Lea Doyle (assistant designers); and Jordana Weiss (apprentice stage manager). Academy graduates in the cast include Raquel Duffy, Courtney Ch'ng Lancaster, Gregory Prest and Paolo Santalucia. Academy graduate and Slaight Family Director of Music Mike Ross is the show's music director and academy graduate Lorenzo Savoini has designed the set and costumes.
The cast also includes: Soulpepper Founding Members Diego Matamoros and William Webster; Evan Buliung, Dan Chameroy and Jeff Lillico; and, in their Soulpepper debuts, Steffi DiDomenicantonio, Tony DeSantis, and Salvatore Scozzari.
SOULPEPPER SALON SERIES (NEW!)
The Soulpepper Company and special guests will present a new series of concert travelogues full of joyous and evocative music, dance and text, all lavishly presented on the 'Grand Hotel' set of Idiot's Delight. Music direction is provided by Mike Ross.
