Every year since the first NIGHT OF DREAD in 2000, Clay & Paper Theatre has asked themselves and their community to choose a “Fear of the Year”. Previous fears have included the Fear of War, the Fear of Snakes, the Fear of Propaganda, the Fear of Authority, the Fear of Death Itself and many others.
This year, with wars popping up everywhere like poisonous mushrooms, many of us are struck by the craziness of watching combatants who look just like each other engaged in deathly combat or seeing groups of protesters yelling at and blaming one another from opposite sides of the street. No explanation of events seems adequate to our understanding of why people who are so similar are able — and willing — to see each other as completely “other”. Why are they angry at us? Why are we angry at them?
THE FEAR OF THEM & US
What will happen when Them and Us come face to face?
Clay & Paper Theatre master puppet builders and mask makers have been joined by many community volunteers to make 120 life-sized masks and two giant masks come to life for this year’s raucous celebration. Come to Dufferin Grove Park on Saturday, October 25th to join our parade through the community. Return to the park with us to participate in the grotesque choreographic confrontation of Them and Us, and to join with us in mocking this fear, all of our fears and death itself.
There will be a limited number of interactive seats during the run for audience who will eat, drink and participate in the story.
Join Clay & Paper Theatre on Saturday 25 October for the 15th annual NIGHT OF DREAD, when we will parade our private and collective fears through the darkened streets of Toronto. NIGHT OF DREAD is an unforgettable evening of pageantry, music and masquerade, towering puppets, stilt dancers, fire-spinners and fearful masks. In honour of its 15th year, mayoral candidate Olivia Chow, and Councillor Ana Bailao will be leading the parade with David Anderson (Clay & Paper Theatre's Founder and Artistic Director) on NIGHT OF DREAD.
The interactive parade begins in Dufferin Grove Park at 6pm. Admission is PWYC ($10 suggested) and all are welcome.
