Pure Carbon is presenting a double bill of original, physical theatre pieces that reimagine the stories of two iconic women, Joanna of Castile and Red Riding Hood. La Loca and Red Winter are linked by their revisionist perspective on history, and dark intense style, both pieces give voice to disenfranchised, passionate women fighting against their oppressive societies. With this double bill, Pure Carbon seeks to push theatrical boundaries and blur the lines of the physical theatre genre, fusing expressing movement, arresting visuals, strong characters, high stakes narratives, poetic text and music into a seamless whole creating a theatre that supersedes the everyday; a theatre without fear.
La Loca brings to life the story of Joanna the “Mad”, a sixteenth century queen of Spain, who was forcibly confined for the last fifty years of her life. On the day of her death, the phantoms in her mind lead her through her fractured memories, taking on the roles of her family and loved ones, to look back on her life and reign. Red Winter is a sensual, brutal and visceral re-imagining of the Little Red Riding Hood fable told entirely through movement and music. Set in a savage world, Red is recast as the master of her own destiny, pushing the familiar story into uncharted territory.
La Loca and Red Winter were both developed through an intensive rehearsal process, devised by the whole ensemble through improvisation and physical exploration. Each show is spearheaded by one of Pure Carbon’s co-founders. La Loca is written and directed by Alexander Kentris, whose last play Bordeaux was mentored by Alan Dilworth. Red Winter is conceived and directed by Katy Murphy, who has worked under Allyson McMackon at Theatre Rusticle. This is Pure Carbon’s first fully mounted production, having recently developed two successful pieces in their Experiment Series, Three Sisters: an experiment (May, 2014) and 64 Ways to Die: A Shakespeare Death Cabaret (July 2014).
Both shows feature dynamic ensembles of independent performers, including Aisha Bentham (Cirqular - Toronto Best of Fringe 2014), Chelsea Dab Hilke (This is For You Anna - Hart House), Erin Eldershaw (Julius Caesar Project - Toronto Fringe), Sheri Godda (My Entertainment World award for The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui), Owen Fawcett (Stumble, Topple and Stand - Buddies in Bad Times), Thalia Leonard (The Good Story - Summerworks), Mark Johnston, Daniella Pagliarello, and Meara Tubman-Broeren. The double bill features set and costume design by Erin Gerofsky (2 seasons at the Shaw Festival as Asst. Designer) and lighting design by Parker Nowlan.
