Paulo is a charismatic immigration lawyer with a shabby home office in Toronto and a reputation for helping pretty women find their way into Canada. Paulo is in love with his assistant Daphne. Daphne can’t love anyone. Enter Illyria — Cupid’s catalyst — who just wants to be free. Inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, confusion reigns in this modern twist on a transformation tale. Love, lust, freedom and fate collide in Ned Dickens’ PAULO AND DAPHNE. Theatreworks Productions is back with a bang with this World Premiere playing Nov. 19 – Dec. 7 at Pia Bouman Theatre. Tickets available starting Nov. 1 by phone at (416) 645-9090 or at www.totix.ca.
Considered to be Ovid’s magnum opus, Metamorphoses – a narrative poem chronicling the history of the world from creation to the death of Julius Caesar – certainly provides plenty of material to inspire artists of every generation. Putting a modern stamp on the myth of Apollo and Daphne with a play set in Toronto and centering on the Canadian hot-topic of immigration, Theatreworks proves that classic texts can hold the same urgency and relevance today as when they were written hundreds – if not thousands – of years ago. Now, after three years of writing, dramaturgy (with Leora Morris of Theatre Heteratae and Brian Quirt of Nightswimming Theatre) and multiple workshops, Ned Dickens (City of Wine, Nightswimming Theatre; Beo’s Bedroom, YPT; Horse, Theatre Heteratae) and Theatreworks are ready to unveil this updated classic.
Starring W. Joseph Matheson (Ragtime, LivEnt; Moby Dick, Stratford Festival; Counsellor at Law, Shaw Festival) and Karen Glave (Macbeth, Cyrano, Stratford Festival; The Strain, dir. Guillermo del Toro/FX) as the star-crossed Paulo and Daphne, with Daniella Forget (The Whole Shebang Cabaret 2013, Global Cabaret Festival/Soulpepper; Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Problem Solver Productions; Exit Strategy: Pinteresque, The MT Space Theatre) as the mysterious Ilyria seeking Canadian citizenship.
Directed by Theatreworks Artistic Director Adrian Proszowski (Creon, Menaechmus Twins, Theatreworks Productions; The Three Musketeers, The Citadel Theatre). Stage managed by Jennifer Stobart (Rob Ford The Musical, McCaig Reagan Productions; The Great Mountain, Red Sky Performance). Production managed by Bryan Steele (Technical Director for Little Mermaid, Ross Petty Productions; The Importance of Being Earnest, Guild Theatre Festival). Set and costume design by Sean Mulcahy (Set design: Buddy, The Buddy Holly Story, Rainbow Stage; Costume design: Mary Poppins, Neptune Theatre). Lighting design by Joseph Patrick (Director’s Project, Shaw Festival; Seven Days, Teatron Theatre). Sound design by Adam Czechowski (Beyond the Rainbow, Legacy Productions).
Theatreworks Productions was founded in 1986, and relaunched in 2013 with the mandate of re-imagining through exploration and creative production the telling of stories derived from ancient texts. Always striving to enhance the local theatre community, Theatreworks recently founded a Condo Reading Series that will integrate theatre and the arts into the everyday lives of Torontonians.
