ARC — Toronto’s artist-led, internationally-focused indie theatre company — is honoured to present the English-language Canadian premiere of Deirdre Kinahan’s MOMENT.
Deepening their ties with the international performance community, ARC’s Resident Artists join Ireland’s Kinahan in bringing her whip-smart dialogue, crackling sense of pace and rhythm, gracefully suspended moments of horror, and wicked humour to the local stage.
ARC Artistic Producer Christopher Stanton (Elora Gorge — The Room; Minotaur — UnSpun; Dora recipient and eight-time nominee) will direct.
“This is an exciting new artistic partnership for us,” says Stanton. “Deirdre is an important voice in contemporary Irish performance. Her work frequently explores themes of family, of forgiveness, and of the strange animal violence deep within all of us that can suddenly explode to the surface — sometimes to catastrophic effect. It’s a thrill for us at ARC to bring Dee’s work to a wider Canadian audience.”
MOMENT will be staged at Sidemart’s Theatrical Grocery, one of Toronto’s hottest indie performance spaces. Through the transformative work of ARC’sresident set and costume designer Jackie Chau (Almighty Voice & His Wife– Touchstone; Brown Balls – fu-GEN; four-time Dora nominee) & guest lighting designer Nicholas Blais (Terminus - Outside the March/Mirvish; Don Giovanni - Opera Nuovo; recipient of the Toronto Theatre Critics’ Award for Best Design), the space will be transformed into an eerie, unsettling evocation of a family home scarred by the lingering effects of past trauma.
The experience promises to be uniquely intimate & immersive, with performers inches from the audience, and houses limited to 30 people per performance.
MOMENT features performances by ARC’s Resident Artistic Company: Deborah Drakeford (Bea – ARC, Dora nomination), Ryan Hollyman (Helen Lawrence - Canadian Stage; past Dora recipient) Janet Porter (Family Stories: Belgrade – ARC; Gruesome Playground Injuries - Birdland), Andre Sills (Kim’s Convenience – Soulpepper; Ruined - Obsidian), Bahareh Yaraghi (Bea – ARC; Blood Wedding - Aluna/Modern Times), Gordon Bolan (BOBLO – Theatre Centre; musician in Local 164), and Aviva Armour-Ostroff (He Left Quietly - Theatre Heterae; Elora Gorge - The Room).
Ms. Kinahan’s play MOMENT raises many questions about forgiveness, and about the difficulties of re-integrating into society after serving a prison sentence. In the current “tough-on-crime” national climate, ARC believes it’s time to take a hard look at these questions. Continuing our mission to create a broader community dialogue, ARC is proud to announce a partnership with The John Howard Society (www.johnhowardtor.on.ca). Together, The John Howard Society and ARC will be presenting a panel discussion on post-incarceration re-integration after the matinée on Sunday, November 16th. Furthermore, proceeds from a special benefit performance of MOMENT on September 11th at 8pm will go toward funding The John Howard Society’s ongoing advocacy work.
