On Wednesday November 26, Roseneath Theatre invites Toronto audiences to join the company at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre for a one-time special event showcasing an important new work. Outside is the story of Daniel, a teen who triumphs over homophobic bullying. Themes explored include teen mental health and the push to establish Gay-Straight Alliances in Canadian high-schools, which have been much-written about in the media in recent years. At time of writing this, Roseneath's provincial tour (Spring 2015) is close to completely sold-out, and the company is looking at possibilities for a second tour of the piece, in the Fall.
Roseneath Theatre is one of the country’s best-kept secrets – although its work is seen by an impressive 100,000 young people per season, these performances are largely in schools and not open to the public. This event is a great opportunity for adults and young people to converge and preview an important work, by an important company.
PLAY SYNOPSIS
Three friends. Two schools. One lunch hour. Daniel is bullied for being different. What begins as a series of hurtful taunts and text messages, culminates in a serious physical assault in the school-yard. He is left questioning his very existence. The story is told by Daniel at the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) meeting in his new school, while his friends Krystina and Jeremy attempt to start a GSA at Daniel’s old school.
This special event will be the first chance to check out Paul’s new script, which will play to 14,400 young people (Grades 7-12) across Ontario in the spring. The tour will launch in the GTA, before the Artistic Ensemble hits the road to Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Sault St. Marie, Ottawa and(perhaps most significantly) more remote communities as far afield as James Bay and Kenora.
Buddies in Bad Times is a most fitting home for this Event, given its LGBTQ mandate, and that Dunn received a 2014 Dora nomination for Outstanding New Play (with Damien Atkins, Andrew Kushnir) forThe Gay Heritage Project, which opened Buddies’ 2013-14 season.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Paul is a playwright, actor and instructor based in Toronto. He is the author of Offensive Shadows (winner of the NOW Magazine Audience Choice Award – SummerWorks), and was recently nominated for a 2014 Dora Award for his work as co-author of The Gay Heritage Project (along with Damien Atkins and Andrew Kushnir), which premiered at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. His play High-Gravel-Blind was chosen to be the first play produced in the Studio Theatre at the Stratford Festival, when it first opened in 2002. In 1998, he premiered his one-man play, BOYS, at the Montreal Fringe, and it was produced again by Theatre Direct Canada in 2000. He has been a guest at the Banff Playwrights Colony and the Stratford Festival Playwrights Retreat. He is a Theatre Arts Graduate of Grant MacEwan College, and the National Theatre School’s Acting Program.
