“Ireland. Somewhere between the 8th century B.C. and the present.” Four soldiers from Leinster, separated from their company and “lost for ten thousand years” lie around a fire – their futures uncertain.
So begins Neil Wechsler’s hilarious and heartbreaking play The Brown Bull of Cuailnge (KOO- ling-eh), which is about to receive its first full production in Canada from Toronto-based creation company The Room, directed by one of its three Dora-nominated Artistic Directors, Geoffrey Pounsett.
To say Wechsler is accomplished is a vast understatement: he’s an Artistic Research Scholar at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center in New York City, the Artistic Director of the Against the Grain Theater Festival in Buffalo, and in 2008 American playwriting giant Edward-freaking-Albee (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Zoo Story, The Goat or Who is Sylvia?) saw fit to award his play Grenadine with the Yale Drama Award – a prestigious international prize for emerging playwrights.
