The UC Follies, a university student driven Theatre Company with over 100 years of legacy, aiming to foster an inclusive space for theatre makers. The third production of the Fall Season, the Follies is presenting A Streetcar Named Desire, by American playwright Tennessee Williams.
A Streetcar Named Desire has entered the minds of the public ever since Marlon Brando stepped into the shoes of Stanley Kowalski in both Elia Kazan’s Broadway and Film adaption. Set after World War Two in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the play follows Blanche DuBois as she visits her sister, Stella. Friction develops between Blanche and Stella’s husband, Stanley Kowalski, as the secrets of her past catch up with her. The iconic movement from melodrama to dramatic naturalism displays the struggles of the past. A landslide effect for all characters is present in this play, as physical, emotional, and social struggles lead to a tragic confrontation.
“This play for me shows the grit of what makes us human; how we take our desires to extremes and sometimes fall victim to what we cannot achieve in life. I want to enrich the passion felt in the visceral theatre experience through Stanislavski’s method acting system, while invoking the themes of how the play seeks a realm higher than ourselves, to live in a world of contentment rather than alienation. In our current society of conflicting ideals, war, and fluctuating stability of mental health, we need hope and compassion both in ourselves and in others.” – Joel Chico, Director.
