Toronto, December 3, 2014 – Crow’s Theatre in association with Canadian
Stage and The Company Theatre present Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece of desire,
longing and ambition, The Seagull, directed by Crow’s Theatre Artistic
Director and 2013 winner of the prestigious Siminovitch Prize, Chris
Abraham. The Seagull will run in Toronto from Sunday, January 11, 2015 to
Sunday, February 8, 2015 (Opening night January 15) at the Berkeley Street
Theatre (26 Berkeley St.). Tickets from $22 to $49 are available by phone

or in person at the box office.
“Love is either a remnant of something degenerating, something which once
had been immense, or it is a particle of what will in the future develop
into something immense, but at the present it is unsatisfying, it gives much
less than one expects" – Anton Chekhov
A play about the cruelty of love - a story about how we create stories - and
about the heartbreakingly wide expanse between the life we live and the life
we long for, Chekhov’s The Seagull was a spectacular failure when it
premiered in 1895, but has survived to become one of the masterpieces of the
modern era.
For his first foray into Chekhov, director Chris Abraham has assembled a
prodigious cast of Canadian theatre talent. Crow’s Theatre’s production of
The Seagull stars Yanna McIntosh as Arkadina, Eric Peterson as Sorin, Philip
Riccio as Konstantin, Christine Horne as Nina, Bahia Watson as Masha, Tom
Rooney as Trigorin, Tom McCamus as Dorn, Tony Nappo as Shamrayev, and Tara Nicodemo as Polina.
“The Seagull explores art, love, and change with incredible candor,”
comments Abraham. “This year, Crow’s will present two plays that look at
these subjects in different social contexts; The Seagull, set in Russia as
it stands at the doorstep of the 20th century; and Annabel Soutar’s The
Watershed, which takes place in Canada between 2012 and 2014 . Both plays
tell stories about artists that want to change the world through art; both
examine the artist within the ecosystem of the family; both are also about
coming to terms with failure.”
Abraham enters into rehearsals on The Seagull at the end of a notably
successful year, which included helming a triumphant and critically
acclaimed production of Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Stratford Festival.
2015 will see Abraham’s critically acclaimed staging of Winners and Losers
(produced by Theatre Replacement and Neworld Theatre in association with
Crow’s Theatre and created by and starring Marcus Youssef and James Long)
open in New York City at the Soho Rep Theatre for a four-week run beginning
January 2. Abraham will debut The Watershed in July, a commission for the
2015 Pan Am Games cultural program. The Watershed is a new work in
collaboration with Annabel Soutar of Montreal’s Porte Parole, the company
with whom he developed Seeds. 2015 will also see Abraham direct Shakespeare
for the Stratford Festival again, helming a production of The Taming of the
Shrew, all while construction of Crow’s Theatre’s new permanent home at
Dundas and Carlaw continues with a projected 2016 opening.
