Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (December 4, 2014) — It’s beginning to look, and feel, a lot like Christmas and the Shaw Festival is ready to revel in the holiday spirit.
The Shaw will once again take part in the annual Santa Claus Parade – officially kicking off the holiday season in Niagara-on-the-Lake – on Saturday, December 13. Always festively festooned, the Shaw Festival’s float is sure to bring smiles to the young and young-at-heart lining Old Town’s parade route beginning at 11 a.m.
In the spirit of the season, The Shaw and members of the Ensemble will take part in fundraising initiatives benefiting local community groups:
•A special presentation of The Polar Express, benefiting Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Citizens for Accountable and Responsible Education (CARE), will be held in the Festival Theatre (10 Queen’s Parade) on Sunday, December 21. Doors open at 12 p.m. – take a selfie with jolly old Santa Claus or enjoy a cup of hot chocolate courtesy of Balzac’s Coffee prior to the 1 p.m. screening. CARE merchandise will also be available for purchase. Tickets are $10 for adults/$5 for children under 12 years old. Call the Shaw Festival Box Office at 905-468-2172 to purchase tickets.
•The annual dramatic reading with musical accompaniment of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, one of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s finest holiday traditions, will once again feature members of The Shaw’s acting ensemble at St. Mark’s Anglican Church (41 Byron Street) on December 21 at 3 p.m. Proceeds support Bethlehem Housing and Support Services. Tickets are $15 for adults/$8 for children and are available at the Shaw Festival Box Office, 905-468-2172, or at the door.
•Come out and enjoy a wintry tale with a pint of Christmas ale on Monday December 22 at Silversmith Brewery (1523 Niagara Stone Road). Hear Shaw ensemble member Tara Rosling give a theatrical reading of The Mistletoe Bride, a short story by Jeanette Winterson, adapted by Peter Hinton; at 7:30 p.m. Entry by donation and all proceeds go to Gillian’s Place. Please be advised: the reading is not suitable for children. For information, call 905-468-8447.
