Toronto, ON - Théâtre français de Toronto is thrilled to present the original French language production of Flesh and Other Fragments of Love (Une vie pour deux) written by the Governor General Award-winning playwright Évelyne de la Chenelière. Directed by Alice Ronfard, and starring Violette Chauveau, (Winner for Best Performance by an Actress in 2012 awarded by the Association québécoise des critiques de théâtre). The critically acclaimed play will be presented in French with English surtitles January 21 to 25 at the Berkeley Street Theatre.
Flesh and Other Fragments of Love (Une vie pour deux), intimately follows Simone and Jean. They have gradually grown apart as a couple and have decided to spend a few weeks vacationing in Ireland in the hope of rekindling their romance. Their plans are turned upside down when Jean discovers the lifeless body of a young woman washed out on the beach, which eventually comes between them, upsetting their ideas of love, jealousy and ageing. Évelyne de la Chenelière delivers a poignant drama, the intimate autopsy of a couple eaten away by self-doubt, jealousy, and the monotony that has overtaken their relationship.
Flesh and Other Fragments of Love (Une vie pour deux), was inspired by Marie Cardinal’s novel Une vie pour deux, based on actual events that she and husband Jean-Pierre Ronfard experienced in the 1970s. The strong direction by Alice Ronfard, the couple’s daughter, infuses de la Chenelière’s adaptation with a palpable intimate power that pierces through the text.
Directed by Alice Ronfard. Starring Jean-François Casabonne, Violette Chauveau and Rachel Graton.
