Puppetmongers Theatre is celebrating both its 25th anniversary of delightful winter holiday performances, AND 40 years of Puppetmongery, with the return of their audience favourite Bed & Breakfast this December. Created by Puppetmongers’ Co-Artistic Directors (and brother and sister) Ann Powell and David Powell, and directed by Sue Miner, this entertaining and charming tale for family audiences aged 5 and older runs for only 4 performances at Tarragon Theatre’s Extra Space at the start of the Winter Break, from December 19 to 21, 2014: there will be two evening shows at 7.30 p.m., December 19 and 20, and two matinees at 2.30 p.m., December 20 and 21.
Set in an exquisitely detailed Edwardian-style dolls’ house and peopled with tiny perfect puppet servants and royalty, Bed & Breakfast is a clever retelling of the fairy tale classic “The Princess and the Pea”, mixed with elements of The Perils of Pauline and Downton Abbey. In collaboration with director Sue Miner, Puppetmongers turn the story on its ear when Prince Cuthbert confesses his love for housemaid Amy and, on a stormy evening, a mysterious stranger seeks refuge at Poshingham Palace.
Bed & Breakfast has twice earned Dora Mavor Moore nominations for Outstanding Production in the Theatre for Young Audiences Division, it was shortlisted for the Chalmers Award for New Canadian Play, and it has received a Citation for Excellence in the Art of Puppetry from l’Union International de la Marionette-USA.
Bed & Breakfast is suitable for children aged 5 and older, and is perfect holiday treat for families.
Ann and David Powell, aka Puppetmongers Theatre, have been delighting audiences with their extraordinary and innovative creations, along with their quirky sense of humour, since 1974. At the forefront of puppetry arts in Canada, the award winning Puppetmongers have created more than a dozen original shows, both for young and for general audiences, and have toured extensively in North America, Europe and the Middle East.
Director Sue Miner is the co-artistic director of Pea Green Theatre Group with Mark Brownell, for which she has received numerous Dora Award nominations. She has thrice been nominated for the Pauline McGibbon Award for Direction.
