The Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) announced today that seven Ontario playwrights have been recommended to receive funding through the Ontario Arts Council’s Theatre Creators’ Reserve this year. As participants in the TCR program, GCTC assesses applications from playwrights and submits recommendations for funding to the Ontario Arts Council.
The goal of the Theatre Creator’s Reserve (TCR) is to deliver funding to playwrights/creators to “buy time” to work on new creation, and aims to reflect the range of artistic practices in the Ontario theatre community – supporting excellence, regional activity, cultural diversity and Aboriginal identity.
The 2014 recipients reflect that goal. They are: Tara Began, Pierre Brault, Beverley Cooper, Lisa L’Heureux, Amanda Lewis, Geoff McBride and David Whiteley.
“There was a great deal of interest in the program this year,” noted Eric Coates, the GCTC’s Artistic Director. “This year’s recipients are developing some exciting, unique Canadian stories and we’re really proud to play a part in their development.” More than 30 applications were received this year, with a total request for funding exceeding $80,000. The GCTC makes recommendations on an allotment of $17,000, which will be distributed to the recipients by the Ontario Arts Council.
In addition to funding, the GCTC invites TCR recipients to join its Ottawa-based Playwrights Unit, where the playwrights meet monthly to discuss the ongoing creative process.
