Three Canadians are among those nominated for International Opera Awards.
Launched in 2013, the event organisers – businessman Harry Hyman and Opera Magazine editor John Allison – said the annual ceremony was designed to present the first truly international set of prizes in the operatic world.
The judging panel, chaired by Allison, includes Sunday Times opera critic Hugh Canning, International Herald Tribune opera reporter George Loomis and The Observer’s classical music critic Fiona Maddocks. Also on the panel are Peter Jonas, former intendant of Bavarian State Opera, the Royal Opera’s former director of opera Elaine Padmore, and Nicholas Payne, director of membership body Opera Europa.

Robert Lepage last directed The Nightingale and Other Short Fables for the Canadian Opera Company in 2009. Adrianne Pieczonka is currentlly singing the role of Amelia in Un ballo in maschera for the COC. Joyce El-Khoury sang the roles both of Mimi and of Musetta in the COC’s production of La Bohème in 2013
The winners of all 21 categories will be announced at a ceremony on April 7 in London at Grosvenor House Hotel.
