Toronto, ON – Canadian Stage today announced additional details for the 2014.2015 theatre season, including a third run of the phenomenally popular Venus in Fur at the company’s intimate Berkeley Street Theatre in December 2014 and directors for two Shakespeare in High Park productions presented under the stars.
Venus in Fur is back – again!
Starring Rick Miller and Carly Street and directed by Jennifer Tarver, Canadian Stage’s production of David Ives’ Venus in Fur was a smash hit in the 2013.2014 season with a month-long run at the Bluma Appel Theatre followed by a holiday remount at the intimate Berkeley Street Theatre space. Because of its popularity and critical acclaim, the show will be presented again in 2014 – first at Montreal’s Centaur Theatre Company (October 14 to November 9), then returning to Toronto for just 11 performances from December 18 to 28.
Audiences will have one final chance to catch Miller and Street reprising their unforgettable roles of Thomas and Vanda in the show the Toronto Star called “sexy, sophisticated and side-splittingly funny.” The first run of the show generated the highest single ticket sales revenue to date under Matthew Jocelyn’s tenure as artistic and general director to date and exceeded sales expectations by 40 per cent.
Venus in Fur follows a young actress (Street) determined to land the lead in a new play based on the classic sadomasochistic novel, Venus in Furs. During her audition, she gets caught up in an electrifying game of cat and mouse with the playwright/director (Miller) that blurs the line between fantasy and reality in an increasingly serious match of submission and domination that only one of them can win. Shakespeare in High Park
This summer at the High Park Amphitheatre, Canadian Stage will once again present two plays in repertory. Nigel Shawn Williams will direct As You Like It, with Kiera Loughran ahelming Titus Andronicus on alternate evenings at Shakespeare in High Park. For more than 30 years, audiences have enjoyed the pay-what-you-can favourite summer tradition under the stars. Performances will run from June 26 to August 31, 2014.
