Toronto, March 10, 2014 ... The Toronto Consort concludes its 2013/14 season with an in-concert presentation of Francesco Cavalli’s 1649 opera, Giasone on April 4 and 5 at 8:00 PM, and April 6 at 3:30 PM, at Trinity-St. Paul's Centre, Jeanne Lamon Hall. For tickets and information, visit www.torontoconsort.org or call the box office at (416) 964-6337.
Sung in Italian, Giasone features the Consort’s own mezzo-soprano Laura Pudwell in the title role, mezzo-soprano Vicki St. Pierre as Delfa, the Belgium-based Canadian tenor Kevin Skelton as Aegeus, tenor and Yale alumnus Bud Roach as Demo, and Consort members Michelle DeBoer as Medea, Katherine Hill as Isifile, and John Pepper as Besso. Artistic Director David Fallis conducts a period orchestra including strings, recorders, theorbo, baroque harp, organ, harpsichord and viola da gamba.
The Toronto Consort has enjoyed great success with an ongoing series presenting masterworks of early opera in concert, including those of Francesco Cavalli, the brilliant Italian composer whose operatic masterpieces were the 17th-century equivalents of Rossini and Verdi. Giasone was the most popular opera of its time, and tells the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece with some decidedly irreverent and comic plot twists.
One of Canada’s leading interpreters of operatic and choral/orchestral repertoire, especially from the Baroque and Classical periods, Fallis is no stranger to the world of 17th century opera. Since his appointment as Artistic Director in 1990, Fallis has introduced Toronto music lovers to the operas of Monteverdi, Rossi and Cavalli. In his role as Music Director for Opera Atelier, Fallis has conducted many performances of operas by Mozart, Handel, Monteverdi, Rameau, and Gluck, and has helped bring that company onto stages around the world — Glimmerglass, the Royal Opera at Versailles, in South Korea, and Japan.
Laura Pudwell’s reputation as a superb vocalist has been well-established as a result of her performances worldwide. Her vast repertoire ranges from early music to contemporary works — she is equally at home on the opera, oratorio or recital stage, and has received international acclaim for her recordings. On the opera stage, Ms. Pudwell has performed across Canada with Opera Atelier, the Calgary Opera, Vancouver Early Music and Festival Vancouver, as well as with the Houston Grand Opera and the Cleveland Opera.
