Toronto, ON - March 26, 2014. For its fourth season, Metro Youth Opera presents the classic Brothers Grimm tale of Hänsel & Gretel to Toronto audiences in a fresh, urban concept that will appeal to audiences both young and young-at-heart.
Three shows only: Friday April 25 - 7:30pm, Saturday April 26 - 7:30pm, and Sunday April 27 - 2:30pm
"This season's production of Hänsel & Gretel is a milestone, both for Metro Youth Opera and for me, personally," says Founder & Artistic Director, Kate Applin. "For a full decade of my childhood, I was an enthusiastic and dedicated member of the Canadian Children's Opera Company. Of all the performances I took part in with the CCOC, the most memorable was when I was a member of the children's chorus for the Canadian Opera Company's production of Hansel & Gretel in 1998. More than 15 years later, and I find myself in the position of combining Toronto's best emerging talent with a dozen enthusiastic singers from the CCOC, and I could not be more thrilled to reach this point in my career."
The classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale Hänsel & Gretel originates from the medieval times of famine, warning young innocents of the dangers beyond an impoverished life. With a new production concept by director Alison Wong, Metro Youth Opera turns Hänsel & Gretel into a modern day fable where our two young heroes must face the realities of their own urbanized world. The production features a stellar cast of emerging, Toronto-based talent led by music director Blair Salter, along with members of the Canadian Children’s Opera Company. All three performances will will be presented in the Aki Studio Theatre in beautiful, new Daniels Spectrum Building on Dundas Street East in Regent Park.
Metro Youth Opera was founded in 2010 by Kate Applin as an opera company in which she and fellow emerging artists could perform. Metro Youth Opera provides Toronto’s talented young opera singers the opportunity to perform complete roles and be compensated for it. Metro Youth Opera is designed to create viable development opportunities for young artists in all fields related to the world of opera: singers, stage directors, music directors, and more. Metro Youth Opera launched in 2011 and has mounted productions of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love and a Triple-Bill of Stravinsky's Mavra, Pergolesi's La serva padrona, and Vallerand's Le Magicien.
