Two Love Stories Facing the Mirror
The LaBute Cycle questions the values placed on female beauty in our modern society
In a world where we are constantly bombarded with images of female beauty, can we ever escape the pressure? This is one of the questions the company of The LaBute Cycle seeks to explore in their upcoming repertory performances of two Neil LaBute plays: Fat Pig and reasons to be pretty.
This duo of darkly comedic plays examines how we value beauty. Each play presents a different perspective on this issue: one exploring how external opinions can affect a couple, the other examining the importance placed on each partner’s opinion of physical beauty. Both challenge the audience to confront the ideals our modern society places upon them about beauty, relationships, and how we value people.
These issues also foster deeply personal performances from each of the actors. As the company prepares to present these plays, they are forced to confront their own anxieties about beauty. “I’ve always been a very confident person, but in portraying Helen in Fat Pig, I’ve been forced to publicly confront some of my feelings about my appearance that I’ve otherwise kept private” says Julia Nish- Lapidus about playing Helen, the plus-sized love interest in Fat Pig. She continues, “working on both of these plays has become very personal for each of us. We are bringing some truly honest and revealing feelings to our performances and I’m excited to see how the audience will respond.”
