Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is establishing the annual Buddies Queer Emerging Artist Award to recognize and encourage the achievements of queer artists who are founding careers in the theatre while engaging with the community.
Award recipients will be chosen by a panel of adjudicators comprised of the current and former Artistic Directors of the company: Brendan Healy, David Oiye, Sarah Garton Stanley, and Sky Gilbert.
The recipient will receive a $1,000 cash prize.
This award will be announced at a public ceremony on June 12th, 2014 at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.
This award was made possible by a gift from the Estate of John Alan Lee.

GUIDELINES FOR ELIGIBILITY
Recipients for this award must:
•Be nominated by an individual or group (nominators may not nominate more than one individual per year);
•Be involved in professional arts community and work as a professional artist;
•Be recognized as an emerging artist as evidenced by their body of work;*
•Identify within the queer spectrum;**
•Not have previously received this award.
•Posthumous nominations will not be accepted.
*Note: Buddies will use the Canada Council for the Arts criteria to distinguish between emerging and mid-career artists (e.g. up to ten years professional experience).
**Note: For the purpose of this award, Buddies uses queer as a word to encompass the identities of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, transsexual, two-spirited, queer, or questioning.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
•The nominee fully meets the eligibility criteria.
•The value of the nominee’s body of work.
•The nominee demonstrates commitment to further developing their career.
•Evidence of connections to the queer arts community.
APPLICATION PROCESS
•An individual, collective, or arts organization may nominate a candidate by filling out the appropriate forms and collecting/submitting support materials. Completed packages must be received by 5 pm on the deadline day.
•Packages can be mailed or hand delivered to the following address: Awards Committee, 12 Alexander Street, Toronto ON, M4Y 1B4. Incomplete, late, or electronically-submitted applications will not be considered.
•All applications will be forwarded to the attention of the Awards Committee.

◦Up to 10 digital images: JPG, 1024 x 768 pixels, files are to be numbered and sequenced
◦Up to 5 minutes of video recording: DVD, Mac compatible video file
◦Up to 5 pages of text: excerpt of writing (poetry, creative writing, original composition, script, etc.)
