April 1, 2014 Neoteny Theatre is pleased to announce its participation in The Playwright Project, presenting one of Caryl Churchill’s earliest plays, the feminist, darkly comic Vinegar Tom. Following the story of a 17th century village on a witchhunt, Churchill describes Vinegar Tom as a play "about witches with no witches in it". Composed of dark scenes juxtaposed with contemporary music (lyrics by Churchill and new music by TakeNote Music + Sound), the play is a searing and satirical look at the oppression of women on the fringes of society: the poor, the unmarried, the "different".
Vinegar Tom will be directed by Artistic Producer Carly Chamberlain (Goodnight Desdemona at Hart House Theatre), featuring an ensemble of Toronto’s finest actors: Madeleine Donohue (Driftwood Theatre, Theatre Gargantua), John Gordon (ProActors Lab, Praxis Theatre), Lynne Griffin (Stratford, Shaw), Sophia Fabiilli (Sudbury Theatre Centre), Keelin Jack (Neptune Theatre), Jessica Moss (Tarragon Theatre, Theatre Brouhaha), Kelly Penner (Shaw Festival, Railway Children) and Sabryn Rock (Obsidian Theatre, Stratford Festival).
As part of The Playwright Project, Vinegar Tom will run in repertory with three other works by Caryl Churchill (A Number, Drunk Enough To Say I Love You and Three More Sleepless Nights) at The Downstage (798 Danforth Avenue), from April 23 May 4, 2014. Tickets are available at www.playwrightproject.com, $10 $15, with twoshow and full day passes also available.

ABOUT NEOTENY THEATRE:
Led by Artistic Producer Carly Chamberlain and Associate Producer and Resident Dramaturg Susan Bond, Neoteny Theatre produces modern reimaginings of classics and lesserknown contemporary works. Our focus is on work that is bold, playful, honest, and maybe a little weird, while speaking to our core value of social equality. The name Neoteny was inspired by the writing of Tom Robbins, and we take it to heart: “Humanity has advanced, when it has advanced, not because it has been sober, responsible, and cautious, but because it has been playful, rebellious, and immature.
