Sky Gilbert returns to Buddies In Bad Times Theatre with a theatrical fantasy inspired by Bradley Manning and Adrian Lamo that imagines a queer love affair between two fictional characters in the midst of the 2010 WikiLeaks scandal. This poetic experiment in fictional history asks: what happens when gay love and national security collide?
The Back Story To “Hackerlove”
In May 2010 Adrian Lamo reported to U.S. Army authorities that Bradley Manning had leaked 260,000 classified United States diplomatic cables. On August 21, 2013 Bradley Manning (who has since revealed that she wants to be allowed to live as a woman -- Chelsea Manning) was sentenced to 35 years in prison. According to Lamo (himself a hacker) Bradley Manning betrayed the United States of America. Is there in fact a link between being a gay outsider and being a spy? History offers us an impressive list of gay spies, including Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt, as well as spies who used sex as a lure (Mata Hari comes to mind). Glenn Greenwald, an out gay man, was the first to leak Edward Snowden’s NSA documents to the press. Bradley Manning was gay and is now transsexual; the real Adrian Lamo is bisexual. In 1997 UK journalist Phillip Knightley wrote in The Independent: “Those interested in the relationship between spying and gays sometimes wonder if the very nature of the secret world attracts gays, who, until recently, had to lead secret lives themselves?”
In Sky Gilbert’s fictional fantasy, a love affair between two of America’s most prominent hackers, is brought to imaginary life before a live audience. The result is funny, crazy, sexy, and fraught with political implications.
