Sistering presents Debra Di Giovanni, Cheri Maracle, and Barbra Lica at its annual, Funny Girls and Dynamic Divas. On Thursday, May 29, these talented women will share the stage at the Jane Mallet Theatre with Elvira Kurt, our quirky host, and Jane Bunnett, a soprano saxophonist, flautist and jazz luminary. “This event is important for women, for the community and for Toronto. It helps to raise awareness of Sistering and the work we do with vulnerable women, as well, it contributes to operational costs of the agency,” said Sheryl Lindsay, Executive Director Sistering.
Funny Girls and Dynamic Divas has been celebrating the power of woman for the past 11 years. “As always, Sistering finds the most talented women in Canada to participate in this event,” said Elvira Kurt “I feel honoured and excited to be sharing the spotlight with these remarkably, gifted ladies.”
Debra DiGiovanni, winner of the 2011 Canadian Comedy Award for best comedian, has a sharp edge while maintaining a playful, happy air that is relatable to all. Cheri Maracle, a Mohawk/Irish actor, singer, songwriter of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, fuses genres like roots, rock, jazz and blues with her powerful voice. Barbra Lica, named one of Canada's Top 5 Female Jazz Singers on CBC Radio 2, discovered jazz music at the age of six. These distinguished performers will join Juno Award-winning musician Jane Bunnett, who once again will introduce a Cuban talent to the evening’s event.
The event commences at 6 p.m. with a reception, an amazing silent auction, and pop up boutique. At 7:30 p.m. prepare for the laughs and music to begin with our line-up of talented performers. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and desserts, donated by local restaurants and caterers, will be served during the reception and intermission.
