Barrie, ON…After the shipping company failed to deliver sets, props and costumes for the production scheduled to open in Barrie, Ontario on April 11, 2014, co-producers confirmed that, aside from cancelling the preview performance on April 10, the production will continue as scheduled.
“We were able to retrieve costumes from the shipment that never left Vancouver and fly them to Barrie, re-assemble all props locally and replace the intricate, multi-layered set by Amir Ofek with projections of real 1925 photographs from the actual rescue mission of Floyd Collins ” – say producers Peter Jorgensen, Katey Wright and Arkady Spivak. “It is the testament to the bravery and commitment of our cast and the creative team who dove into the rescue mission of their own without a single question”.
Written by Tina Landau and Adam Guettel, Floyd Collins, co-produced by Vancouver’s Patrick Street Productions and Barrie’s Talk Is Free Theatre, is about the caver of the title who, while chasing a dream of fame and fortune by turning a Kentucky cave into a tourist attraction, himself became the attraction when he got trapped 200 feet underground. In yet another level of bittersweet irony, the production of the play that satirizes sensationalism, has landed in the same category. Jorgensen and Spivak say: “The attention and the support we received from the general theatre and Barrie communities have been overwhelming. Most performances are approaching capacity and many have been sending unsolicited support, both financial and manpower”.
Floyd Collins is directed by Vancouver’s Peter Jorgensen and stars a company of 13 artists including Daren A. Herbert as Floyd Collins, Michael Torontow as Homer Collins, Krystin Pellerin as Nellie Collins and many others. It opens on Friday, April 11 and will continue its scheduled run to April 19, at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts in Barrie, ON.
Tickets, performance schedule and other information are available at www.tift.ca or (705) 792-1949.
