TORONTO (May 13, 2014) — Following its sold-out and critically acclaimed run of AtG’s Messiah last December, Against the Grain Theatre presents its spring production of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande on June 19, 21, 23 and 25, 2014.
Staged in the Max Tanenbaum Courtyard Gardens at the Canadian Opera Company’s headquarters on Front Street East—a hidden Toronto gem with ivy-covered walls and back-alley access—the production promises to be next month’s hottest ticket on Toronto’s musical scene. Sung in French, Pelléas et Mélisande features an outstanding Canadian cast comprising baritone Etienne Dupuis making his role debut as Pelléas, soprano Miriam Khalil as Mélisande, baritone Gregory Dahl as Golaud, bass Alain Coulombe as Arkel, mezzo-soprano Megan Latham as Geneviève and soprano Andrea Núñez as Yniold.
“You can’t get much closer to a sung play than Pelléas et Mélisande. Given the incredible imagery in this piece, staging it in an outdoor venue will allow everyone’s creative imagination to take over, and the audience will play an important role in setting the intimate ambiance,” said Joel Ivany, AtG’s artistic director and founder.
Guest music director Julien LeBlanc provides piano accompaniment, and the creative dream team that sent chills down everyone’s spine with AtG’s lauded 2012 production of The Turn of the Screw is reunited with direction by Joel Ivany, set design by Camellia Koo and lighting design by Jason Hand. Costume designer Ming Wong rounds out the creative team.
