The Indiegogo campaign for Barry Germansky's upcoming Off-Broadway play, The Answer-Killing Question Buys a Crisis, continues until Tuesday, June 17th.
The play is a satire on educational institutions at all levels. Although Western society has long promoted institutionalized education, there have been relatively few inquiries into the nature of this bureaucratic form of learning and how it forces students and teachers to maintain arbitrary standards of knowledge. The play chronicles the struggles of a university student who takes on his school's corrupt totalitarian regime and its imposition of a single answer to all possible questions. The school reflects the singular mindset of society as a whole, and the student's professors consider his actions to be criminal. He soon realizes that fighting for his principles is only the beginning; he will soon be fighting for his life, as well. To make matters worse, his best friend and long-time co-conspirator may not be who he says he is.
The performance schedule will be announced at a later time, but the creative team behind the play is aiming for an Off-Broadway world premiere in late July to kick off an Off-Broadway run. The Answer-Killing Question Buys a Crisis is the latest play by Barry Germansky (whose Follow the Tracks We Forgot to Finish opened Off-Broadway last December), and it will be produced by Tim Sika (the President of the San Francisco Film Critics Circle) and directed by Steven Carl McCasland (founder of the Beautiful Soup Theater Collective).
This dynamic creative team is raising funds to cover the costs of producing the play, with the theatre rental comprising 75% of the total budget. In return, they aim to deliver a unique, one-of-a-kind production that will leave audiences thinking long after the curtain falls.
The Answer-Killing Question Buys a Crisis, Barry Germansky's upcoming Off-Broadway satire on educational institutions at all levels, now has an official website: http://barryjg10.wix.com/barry-germansky. Fans will be able to routinely check in to find the latest materials documenting each stage of the play's ongoing production process, including articles, photos, and videos
Also to continuously appear on the website are promotional videos featuring discussions with Germansky about the various thematic concerns of his play. These concerns include: the importance of valuing individual ideas on their own terms; the urgent need to break through the Capital "R" Romantic adulation of educational institutions; and the risks of being an academic revolutionary in an environment controlled by self-serving bureaucrats who standardize knowledge for the sake of maintaining their abstract positions of power. You can watch the first video in this cycle here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mODfObDxeg0.
In addition to Germansky, the play's creative team is comprised of producer Tim Sika, the President of the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, and director Steven Carl McCasland, who founded the Beautiful Soup Theater Collective. News of all three members' involvement in the production will appear regularly on the play's new official website.
Barry Germansky, a self-taught playwright and screenwriter born in Toronto, Ontario, has been writing ever since he could pick up a pencil. He graduated summa cum laude from York University's Humanities Department in June 2013 and won its prestigious 25th Annual Book Prize for the student graduating with the highest grade point average. In December 2013, he co-produced his Off-Broadway play, Follow the Tracks We Forgot to Finish, with Conor Romero, who starred as the titular actor's eldest son on NBC's "The Michael J. Fox Show." He is currently writing a comedy TV series for Netflix called "Smitty's."
