Toronto, ON – This year, the Toronto Fringe looks to the future. After carefully listening to audience and artist feedback throughout the year, the Fringe has focused its resources on boosting customer services to better support the next generation of theatre-makers. The 2013 Fringe Festival was a time to look back – to reflect on the 25 years of Toronto Fringe history. This July, the 2014 Fringe Festival is about looking forward!
Don’t Just Stand There – SEE SOME THEATRE
This year’s festival is packed to the brim, with 150+ shows in 30+ venues, featuring 1,000+ artists in every imaginable genre. Don’t miss our site specific performances in bars, cafes, a tavern and even a synagogue. FringeKids! shows are on stage each day at the Palmerston Library Theatre for the young and young-at-heart. And the Fringe Club will be abuzz all afternoon and evening with buskers, AlleyPlays, a visual arts market, hip local food vendors, our licenced pop-up patio and, this year, three underground dance parties!

Here are some exciting changes and additions to the 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival:
Advance Tickets: Toronto Fringe is joining other major Canadian Fringes (Edmonton, Vancouver) to make 100% of tickets available in advance, instead of holding 50% for at-the-door sales as in previous years. This means patrons will spend less time at the box office and more time seeing shows. For those who love taking risks and waiting for buzz – tickets will still be sold at the door, if available.
Smartphone App: The Fringe – in the palm of your hand! This free app (compatible with iPhone, Android and Blackberry) will be your digital program guide, your direct connection to Fringe social media, your box office and your calendar. Show cancellations will be updated on the app in real-time, and you can opt into push notifications regarding schedule changes and special events. Available June 6 at the App Store and Google Play.
The New FringeKids! Club: This year even the littlest Fringers will have a home-base. Like the “grown up” Fringe Club behind Honest Ed’s, this FringeKids! Club will feature free outdoor entertainment and kids-friendly vendors. Plus there will be workshops for kids, crafts, snacks and fun for all the family. The FringeKids! Club will be open Thursday – Sunday afternoons during the festival. Location announcement coming soon.
Theatre Entrepreneurs Network & Training (T.E.N.T.): This immersive training program will give emerging theatre professionals (aged 19-24) the skills necessary to succeed in the indie theatre community. Offering daily workshops led by industry professionals, intimate discussions on hot topics and access to free Fringe tickets, the T.E.N.T. program will provide essential training to Future Fringers.
And as always, we have tons of amazing indie theatre, dance, visual art and more at the 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival. This year features Fringe veterans, kooky interpretations of the classics, new Canadian musicals, touring productions from as far away as Japan and surprising site specific adventures. Don’t Just Stand There – SEE SOME THEATRE. This year, there’s no excuse!

The Toronto Fringe
Now celebrating its 26th year, the Toronto Fringe provides creative opportunities for artists and audiences by producing two important festivals – the Toronto Fringe Festival and the Next Stage Theatre Festival – and by running outreach activities that benefit youth, artists and the theatre community at large. In 2014, the Toronto Fringe launched a national crowdfunding platform for indie artists, called Fund What You Can (FWYC). Our home, the Fringe Creation Lab, welcomes independent artists year round, encouraging their creative work by offering them affordable space to make art, congregate and innovate.
