In bittersweet news for Tarragon Theatre, it was announced yesterday that Gideon Arthurs has been named Chief Executive Officer of the National Theatre School. Arthurs will assume his new position as of August 4, 2014 and becomes the 10th leader of the NTS, taking over from Simon Brault, who has held the position for the past 17 years.
Arthurs has been the General Manager of Tarragon Theatre since August 2012 when he came from the Toronto Fringe where he served as Executive Director for five years. In his time at Tarragon, Gideon developed a new audience enrichment program and spearheaded multiple projects for the improvement of the building. All of his projects were designed to improve the audiences’ experience and create accessible theatre.
Arthurs is sad to be leaving Tarragon; however he is looking forward to taking his passion for the development of Canadian theatre to Montreal and the National Theatre School. “Tarragon is an amazing organization. I have learned so much from the passion, and dedication of the staff, artists, and audiences that call Tarragon home. I am so proud of what we have accomplished over the past two years and know that Tarragon will continue to be one of the most important arts institutions in the country. I look forward to continuing to work with them in my new capacity as CEO of the National Theatre School. I also want to thank the entire Toronto theatre community for their inspiration and support over the past ten years here.”
Artistic Director Richard Rose had this to say about Arthurs’ time at Tarragon "Gideon took the Tarragon to a new level of comfort for our audience... better service, better facilities, better access for the disabled, better seating for a better time and better theatre. He will be missed and we wish him the very best in his new position." The Tarragon community and staff are sorry to see Arthurs go, but are excited for him to embark on this exciting endeavour and wish him nothing but success in his new post.
