Red One Theatre Collective teams up with hit playwright Kat Sandler and Theatre Brouhaha to present a dark, sexy dramedy about family, survival, toughness, dreaming big, and a fighting rooster at The Storefront Theatre, June 12 – 28.
Cockfight by Kat Sandler comes hot off Red One Theatre’s banner year; including 2014 Dora Award Nominated hit After Miss Julie (Outstanding Direction — David Ferry, Outstanding Performance, Female — Claire Armstrong).
Cockfight tells the story of the Chiavetti brothers: three hard-luck foster kids who have grown up to be adult rabble-rousers. Charlie (Brenhan McKibbon) has got a broken heart, August (Jakob Ehman) has a crush at work, and Mike (Benjamin Blais) has a scheme: he's bought a fighting rooster and is convinced he and his brothers can have the good life if he can train it to fight the same way he trained his brothers. Things get complicated when August's work crush, the thrill-seeking, though seemingly innocent Ingrid (Caroline Toal) accidentally ends up with the brothers' collateral...and the dangerous psychopath (David Tompa) who sold them the rooster comes looking for it. There are schemes, betrayals, secrets and lies, before the brothers land at a cataclysmic conclusion that will test their family, their resolve and each other more than they ever thought possible.
Kat Sandler (Help Yourself, Delicacy, We Are The Bomb, Rock, Sucker) writes and directs a cast and crew composed of Red One and Theatre Brouhaha veterans (including Red One artistic director Benjamin Blais) in a script that combines the gritty, relevant, and fast styles of both companies. The result is a fantastic blending of two of Toronto's most prolific indie theatre company's strengths and passions in a show that is not to be missed.
This is the first full collaboration between the two companies.
