Young People’s Theatre is very proud to open their 2014/15 season with the stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning story, To Kill a Mockingbird. Featuring a cast of fourteen and directed by Allen MacInnis, this extraordinary play will be presented on the Mainstage from October 6 to November 2, 2014.
To Kill a Mockingbird is an unforgettable coming-of-age story that examines racial injustice in Depression-era Alabama through the eyes of a child. The plot and characters of Harper Lee’s story are loosely based on the author's observations of her family and neighbours, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama in 1936, when she was 10 years old. The book became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. To Kill a Mockingbird went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film. This classic of modern American literature was recently cited by the American Library of Congress as being second only to the Bible as the book that had made a difference in people’s lives.
