Short works of music, dance, theatre, film, poetry, kids stuff, clown, visual art and comedy are showcased in the restaurants, hair salons, clothing stores, cafes, bars, flower shops, parks, antique stores, community centres, laundromats and parking lots of the historic and diverse neighbourhood of Parkdale. All for free!
Beginning at 2pm at the Dufferin Amphitheatre (Queen and Dufferin), Lab Cab presents short works of art (between 2 and 25 minutes) in various venues on and around Queen Street West. The Festival leap frogs west throughout the day, ending in the venues closest to Roncesvalles Ave by 8pm.
Over 100 artists in 75 venues throughout Parkdale!
Wander from a ten minute film at The Rhino to a theatrical art installation at Gelato Pizza; choose between hearing twenty minutes of rock and roll at Certified Tire and Auto and a short story being read at Sun Fa Restaurant...there is something for everyone and at least four performances to choose from at one time. Performers range from age sixteen to seventy, from the newly emerged to the well established.
Lab Cab starts each day with a FREE BBQ lunch from 2 – 2:30 at the Dufferin Amphitheatre. There are performances and activities for kids of all ages. Businesses along Queen Street West in Parkdale will be having sidewalk sales and selling food outside their businesses.
Free workshops this year include jewellery making, salsa dancing and (for children) mask making. Free childcare is offered for parents wanting to see more adult themed shows.
“The Lab Cab Festival: Parkdale brings audiences into different establishments, showcasing the insides of businesses and community centres and churches. It has performances outdoors, but is not a street festival. The Festival distinguishes itself from other art crawls with its range in and amount of artistic disciplines and performance venues. We do not charge artists to participate, but rather, we pay them. We do not charge the audience to participate: everything is free. This freedom encourages audiences to participate in the event, erasing the prejudice that art is for the elite. “
Aviva ArmourOstroff, Artistic Director
Lab Cab is pleased to welcome on board local community partners Mammalian Diving Reflex's The Torontonians, The Parkdale Film and Video Showcase and the Parkdale Village Historical Society, each sharing their current creative projects that shine a light on what makes Parkdale so special!
The Lab Cab Festival is supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Toronto Arts Council, Canadian Heritage, Business for the Arts, The Parkdale Village BIA and Zipcar.
