Mercury Fur is set in a post-apocalyptic version of a metropolitan city, where terror, gangs, violence, and drugs - in the form of butterflies - rule. The protagonists are a gang of youths surviving by their wits. They deal in the butterflies, and sell objects looted by their butterfly-addicted customers from museums and galleries. Their main source of income however is holding parties for wealthy clients in which wildest fantasies are brought to life. Mercury Fur is a dark and provocative play that was quite controversial when it first premiered in London in 2005. It is though, at its heart, a story of morality, devotion and love.
Mercury Fur was an immediate cult classic when it premiered in the U.K., gaining praise from a variety of high profile media sources:
“Interspersed with bleak humour, Ridley’s imaginative script zips back and forth like machine-gun fire … Mercury Fur is a relevant piece of theatre, packing an astonishingly visceral punch.“ -Patrick Smith (The Telegraph)
“Almost unbearable to endure and yet so compelling you can't stop watching, Ridley's play is, for all its disturbing violence, fiercely moral and tender. "I love you so much I could burst into flames," declares Darren in an oft-repeated litany as the brothers try to hang on to the shreds of humanity amid the free-flowing blood and the warping lure of fantasy.” –Lyn Gardner (The Guardian)
Mercury Fur features the talent of Toronto Fringe Festival favourite, Cameron Laurie (52 Pickup-Winner, Best of Toronto Fringe, 2014), Tarragon Theatre’s Company Manager, Annemieke Wade (MacBeth, Richard III-Hart House Theatre) and popular drag performer, Eric Rich (A Chorus Queen-the official drag musical of Pride 2014).
Never before performed in Canada, Seven Siblings Theatre Company are incredibly excited to bring this powerful and controversial play to Toronto.
