August 13, 2014, Blyth, Ontario... Blyth Festival's Young Company is taking a journey Out of this World as they highlight the perilous tales of teenagers around the globe for five performances, August 27 to 30. Through storytelling, role playing, rhythm and song, harrowing current events will both enlighten and inspire! The show begins at the Phillips Studio and travels outside so please wear appropriate clothing. The show will go on whatever the weather. The rain venue will be the Phillips Studio and Production Shop.
Out of this World is created and performed by local teens Nicholas Beardsley, Melanie Bishop and Emma Enders all from Wingham; Jillian Bjelan from Hensall; Ethan Johnston from Bluevale; Brittney Lowey and Rebecca Lowey from Seaforth; and Seth Nichol from Brussels. The creative work began on August 4 under the guidance of director Jamie Robinson, co-ordinator Virginia Iredale and dramaturge Curtis te Brink.
Robinson is the Co-Artistic Director of the Grey-Bruce Arts Collective in Meaford and Co-Founder of Montreal's Metachroma Theatre. He is a familiar face to Blyth audiences appearing in such favourites as Beyond The Farm Show, Garrison's Garage, The Drawer Boy, Filthy Rich, Stolen Lives and Corker. Some of his other theatre credits include Angels in America Parts I & II for the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, the title role in Richard III for Metachroma, Romeo & Juliet for Canadian Stage in High Park and four seasons with the Stratford Festival. He has also been seen on such TV shows as Murdoch Mysteries, The Rick Mercer Report and ABC's Celeste in The City.
The Blyth Festival Young Company is a summer drama intensive which provides youth aged 13-19 the opportunity to learn from experienced theatre professionals as they prepare a play for production. In addition to the Young Company, annual youth programs also include a drama day camp for children aged 5 to 12, as well as drama scholarships to five local secondary schools and a Theatre-for-Young-Audiences production for elementary schools each fall. As opportunity allows, local youth are also invited to audition for the Festival's summer productions.
