Groundbreaking new drama presented by The Junes Company, written/directed by Andrew Faiz and starring Andy Fraser premieres at Toronto’s RED Sandcastle Theatre. (Sep. 18 – Oct. 4, 922 Queen Street East)
Opening in the past and present simultaneously, Aromas is a non-linear approach to storytelling, In the past, our heroine Katalin is touring Swan Lake in Dubai with a cast of ice dancers. In the present, Chanel is in her apartment preparing herself to play the many roles demanded by her profession as an escort. Katalin has been running her whole life and out of this restless search for identity, Chanel appears. Is Chanel a fantasy, or is she the real Katalin? Or does it matter?
Playwright and Director Andrew Faiz describes the play “push[ing] itself out of [him] slowly over several years” during a difficult time in his life:
Aromas was written over the period my mother grew sick and finally died. I didn’t realize then, but the play was an exploration of my own sense of identity. The search for identity is a constant theme in all immigrant explorations since many of the anchors—community, culture, language, history—shift or change. For many of us, immigrant or not, identity is an act of will.
While centred on the body, the play is an exploration of the spiritual self. As Chanel says, “The Kama Sutra is a book of prayers you do with your body. Even a broken body wants to pray.” This line opened up this play for me. Men and women, many of them anti-religious, have responded openly to this script. It makes people feel and sends them on their own spiritual journey. “
