Play Practice Collective presents the Toronto Premiere of the Obie Award-winning comedy Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker
PLACE: A windowless dance studio in the town of Shirley, Vermont. There is a wall of mirrors. There is a big blue yoga ball.
TIME: Summertime.
Four lost New Englanders enrol in Marty's six-week-long community-centre drama class and begin to experiment with harmless games. Hearts are quietly torn apart, and tiny wars of epic proportions are waged and won. Circle Mirror Transformation is a beautifully crafted diorama, a petri dish in which we see, with hilarious detail and clarity, the antic sadness of a motley quintet.
Circle Mirror Transformation features a team of Toronto theatre, TV and film artists – director Heather Braaten (Next To Normal, Flowers, co-director of Nohayquinsepa). Pip Dwyer (Praxis Theatre, Shakespeare in the Rough) David Frisch (In the Next Room, or the vibrator play *Rideau award winner, Below the Belt), Laura Jabalee (Out With Dad *award-winning web-series), Jill Harland, (Upper Canada Playhouse, Neptune Theatre) Mark Whelan (A Number? Carthorse).
“What is courageous and beautiful about this play is that its hyper-naturalistic style becomes a theatrical complement to real life. Baker presents moments that are not theatrical tidal waves, but instead are rippling undercurrents, subtly shifting her characters’ psyches and relationships over the six week duration of the class,” says producer Pip Dwyer.
Circle Mirror Transformation is Play Practice Collective’s inaugural production.
"Smartly, sneakily, Baker gives us the rare theatercentric play that's not self-obsessed. [CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION] is about real people exploring their lives through tiny leaps of faith and creativity." —BackStage.
