Toronto, ON…The playwright’s festival that started it all for Latin American playwrights in Canada is going into its 7th and final year! To date the festival has developed the new works of over 25 Latin American writers in Canada such as Carmen Aguirre, Amaranta Leyva, Juan Carlos Velis, Marilo Nunez and more! Featuring works by Martha Batiz, Isaac Luy and Amanda Parris, the 7th annual De Colores Festival of New Works will be presented at the Wychwood Theatre October 23 and 24, 2014.
This year’s festival showcases three new and exciting plays: Last Stop by Mexican born writer Martha Batiz is set on a TTC streetcar where a young Mexican woman begins a heated discussion with a fellow passenger on the politics of riding the streetcar. Isaac Luy’s Exit is based on true events, set in Venezuela’s current political climate. 32C by Amanda Parris is a one-woman exploration of growing up on the east side of the city. Blending mythology of Tituba (from Arthur Miller’s The Crucible) the playwright explores what it means to be a black woman in Canada today.
The 2014 De Colores Festival will also feature new work created by the Nueva Voz Youth Theatre Program nightly. A closing night party will happen on October 24, 2014, after the final reading of the De Colores Festival! $5 cover includes dancing, DJ, cash bar! Audience members attending the 24th are let in free to the party that evening!
Alameda Theatre Company produces Canadian theatre with a distinct Latin American perspective.
